COOL FOR YOU: Time Against Time

Almost since the very beginning of colonialism, European religious music served as a significant force within Christianisation projects throughout the world. It aided missionaries as well as other church and secular officials both in their attempts to convert the colonised to Christian belief and ritual, and to establish European cultural practices as hegemony. Similar to the way that religious texts provided colonists and their supporters with a sense of justice and moral righteousness, religious music provided a sense of aesthetic and cultural authority. Since 2015, COOL FOR YOU has been developing a body of work around the manipulated and pitch-shifted samples of Sacred Harp congregational choir music—a musical tradition continuously involved in various contexts of imperialism and colonialism since the 18th century. Out of small snippets of dissonances within the choirs, new compositions are arranged around beat patterns in time signatures that frequently exist outside of the 4/4 norm. By disrupting the standard rhythms of conventional electronic production, COOL FOR YOU’s music doesn’t assimilate but instead “passes” for club music. Refusing the expectations associated with a commodified nightlife, its peculiar time signatures and irregular rhythms gently complicate dancing habits. For the live performance Time Against Time, an immersive environment will be created in which visitors are enwrapped in a deep blue atmosphere.
