Amid the political turmoil in Kosovo during the country’s unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, a number of contributors – including politicians, intellectuals, public figures, and ordinary people – recount in Serbo-Croat the reasons why they no longer speak this formerly official language. The community’s fraught relationship toward its history and identity in the context of the Yugoslav wars of the nineties points to wider questions of trauma, memory and loss. The film continues a line of Collins’ practice situated in geopolitical regions afflicted by Western (neo-)imperialism, its violent histories and contested legacies.
