The Impossibility of Showing What Should Never Have Happened explores the continuities of National Socialist child rearing ideals in post-war German society. The parenting book The German Mother and Her First Child by lung specialist Dr. Johanna Haarer, steeped in Nazi ideology, remained in publication with a different title until 1987. Silke Schönfeld enters into a dialogue with her mother and aunt, whose upbringing in the 1950s and 60s was still very much characterised by a constant call for discipline, obedience and the suppression of one’s own needs.
